We appreciate your interest in St. Stephen of Hungary School. 
 
 
Choosing the right school for your children is one of the most important gifts you can bestow on them. We appreciate your interest in joining the St. Stephen of Hungary School (SSHS) community. SSHS is an award winning Catholic School, in the Archdiocese of New York, with a rich heritage of academic excellence. 
 
Applications for all grades are currently being accepted on a rolling basis. The goal of our admissions process is to objectively determine each candidate's potential to thrive at SSHS throughout their elementary school education. 
 
For those candidates who are accepted, the family is asked to confirm enrollment within two weeks by submitting the contract and the non-refundable two month tuition deposit. 
 
We welcome applicants from ADNY schools closing at the end of the 22/23 school year.

II. The Applicant's file is considered complete when the items below are uploaded to the online portal: 
 
1) Completed application submitted with $225 non-refundable application fee paid online. (Required) 
(If the family plans to apply for School Tuition Assistance upon acceptance, you will be prompted to pay a reduced, non-refundable application fee of $150.)
 
2) Birth Certificate (Required) If citizenship is other than US, please provide copy of passport/visa. 
 
3) Baptismal Certificate (If Applicable)
 
4) Immunization Records and Yearly Physical Exams. (Required) SSHS does not accept Religious Letters of Exemption for Immunizations. 
 
5) Teacher Recommendations - Be Sure to Use the Recommendation Form(s) below

*Grades 1-8 - Required 
 
6) Report Cards from previous school(s) - see Permission to Release Records below

7) Standardized Test Scores (if applicable)
 
8) Notice re: Support Services
Families are encouraged to indicate on the application if the student is expected to transfer with a service plan. Our mutual goal is to provide the appropriate educational environment for your child. Our Director of Support Services, Ms. McCullagh, will coordinate with you. However, SSHS cannot guarantee the placement of NYDOE-approved providers. Thank you. 
 
 
III. Screening/Assessment Process -  PreK 3 - Gr. 1 Applicants
The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with students and communicate with the teacher by following simple directions and doing activities such as drawing and counting. 
 
IV.  "King for the Day" Program - Gr. 2 - 8 Applicants
The applicant will visit SSHS for a shadow day. 
The applicant will submit a writing sample (Gr. 4-8 only)
The applicant will complete an online math and reading assessment. 
 
 
Note:  Permission to Release Records
Your school may ask for this form in order to send the records that SSHS requires during the application process. 
 
Newly accepted, enrolled students should also provide this form to the prior school so FINAL records are sent to SSHS. (This generally occurs during the summer.)

What are the age requirements for admission to Saint Stephen School?

In accordance with the Archdiocesan of New York’s regulations, students will be considered/admitted for the school year only if they are the correct age for that program/grade by December 31st.
 
Pre K 3 Program - must be 3 years old 
Pre K 4 Program - must be 4 years old
Kindergarten - must be 5 years old
First Grade - must be 6 years old 
 
All children must be toilet trained upon entering the school.
