Second Grade

Dear Student,

Welcome to second grade!  I hope you are having a terrific summer.  I can’t wait to see everyone on September 8th and begin our exciting journey together.  I am planning a wonderful year of learning and fun as we explore new topics and strengthen skills you built in first grade. This year some of the things you will have the opportunity to do is work with technology, perform plays, research interesting topics, and solve an assortment of math problems.  Also this year you will make your First Communion.  This is a very memorable experience.  During all these experiences, I aim to provide a caring and encouraging environment where you feel comfortable to try new things and share ideas with others.
I hope that you are working on making your decorative cereal box related to one of the books.  I am excited to see your completed project. I hope you found Amelia Bedelia as funny as I did.  I encourage you to read other books about Amelia Bedelia if you enjoyed her character.  As for The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, I am still deciding if I believe the wolf or the pig side of the story.  I suggest you reread some of the many versions of The Three Little Pigs help you make your decision. It would be great to hear your opinion.  As for Mr. and Mrs. Green, I wish I could have gone camping this summer like they did.  It seemed like a lot of fun!
This brings me to a different homework assignment related to your own adventures.  I love to travel and would like to hear about the places you have been.  We will be learning a lot about communities this year and it is great to share some of the different locations you have visited to help us as we discuss characteristics of various types of communities.   I ask that you tell me about at least two places you have traveled.  It could be you went to another state, another country, or just some place outside of
New York City.  You can write about any memorable trip.  It can but does not have to be a place you went this summer.  Please tell me why you traveled there and few things you saw and did while you were at each place.  Also please mention how it is similar or different to where you live now. You are to type or write a paragraph about each place you choose.  We will be pinpointing these locations on maps in the classroom and displaying the writing for others to learn more about us and the places that we went.  If you would like to send a photograph to display for each place it would make a wonderful addition but is not required.  I anticipate that I will learn about some new places I haven’t been before and I am looking forward to sharing with you about my travels to Colorado and Ireland this summer.
Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation.  I am eagerly awaiting your arrival in September.  I know we will have wonderful year!

All the Best,
Mrs. Fitzpatrick
