Kindergarten

                                                                                                August 2010

Dear Student and Parent,

Welcome to Kindergarten!  My name is Miss Cheryl, and I will be your child’s teacher during one of the most incredible years they will have in their school career!  Kindergarten is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.  It is also the building block for your child’s education for years to come. My main focus is to make sure your child is comfortable and in a calm, loving, and nurturing environment.  During this school year, I will make your child’s learning experience as fun and exciting as possible.

This is my second year teaching kindergarten at St. Stephen and I am looking forward to the upcoming year!  I believe every child learns at different stages and when a child is developmentally ready he or she will progress.  I always teach ideas that are age appropriate, so the children have a fantastic time learning.  This past summer, I joined the Institute of the Teaching of Writing at Columbia University’s Teachers College.  I am excited to start practicing all the new strategies I have learned to help your child through the writing process.

Throughout the year, the children will learn a great deal.  Together, we will implement units based on the Essential Learning Standards, along with alphabet, phonics, mathematics and science. We will have an integrated approach to learning and focus on units which motivate children at this age level such as the

environment, the world around us.  Your child will also gain socialization skills, which is a very important part of your child’s growth process.

Please have your child bring photos of themselves on the first day of school. When picking these photos, chose photos that help describe things he or she likes to do.  We will be using these photos to decorate our writing folders. They will be used to inspire writing ideas throughout the year.

I am very excited and I look forward to a fantastic school year with you and your child!  I am always available for any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Miss Cheryl
