The Archdiocese of New York has established an Essential Learnings committee which continues to revise and to distribute an Essential Learnings Curriculum on a subject by subject basis. These documents include pacing guides and curriculum mapping. Each curriculum area is presented in accordance with the New York State standards. The administration, faculty, and staff of St. Stephen of Hungary School provide lessons in all content areas based on the foundation of Essential Learnings.
For example, the continuum of language arts development from Pre-K through Grade 8 is formatted around the language activities of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. In accordance with the tradition of Catholic school curriculum, there is also an emphasis on grammar, sentence structure, and the mechanics of writing. Technology is woven throughout the standards. Reference is made to the use of the internet, CD ROM, electronic mail and word processing. Library resources and research are presented as central to the curriculum development process.
Cognitive skills which are taught at St. Stephen of Hungary School are always presented in a value-laden setting.
